Welcome to the Coweeta LTER Location of the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory and Southern Appalachian Study Area

One of the oldest continuous environmental studies in North America, Coweeta is based in the eastern deciduous forest of the southern Appalachian Mountains, and the centerpiece of a long-term cooperation between the University of Georgia and the USDA Forest Service.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Coweeta LTER has evolved from a site-based to a site- and region-based project centering on the effects of disturbance and environmental gradients on biogeochemical cycling, and the underlying watershed ecosystem processes that regulate and respond to those ecological cycles. Our current research program, entitled "Southern Appalachia on the Edge" focuses on the impacts that exurbanization and climate change are having on water quality, water quantity, and other ecosytem services.

Intensive Hillslope Plot Planning

The Terrestrial Hillslope Study is part of an effort to understand land use patterns and associated flowpaths, habitats, and human communities found within 1) forested hillslopes; 2) hillslopes in traditional valley developments; and 3) hillslopes in mountaintop developments. Previous work in the Coweeta LTER VI proposal has focused on regional watersheds or subbasins; this fine-scale approach will be taking place in headwater streams and hillslopes. Ultimately the study will link terrestrial hillslope processes, stream water inputs, and instream processes. Because we will need to landowner permission to set up this study, we need to a way to succinctly describe the different aspects of the study and make sure we have covered everything we said we would do in the proposal.
